1Warm the milk until lukewarm and dissolve the sugar and yeast in it. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
2In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the milk mixture and egg. Mix until a dough forms.
3Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Cover and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
4Roll out the dough into a rectangle. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough.
5Fold the dough into thirds, like a letter. Roll out again and repeat the folding process two more times, chilling the dough for 20 minutes between folds.
6Shape the dough into a loaf and place in a greased loaf pan. Cover and let rise for 45 minutes.
7Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the top with egg wash if desired.
8Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown. Let cool before slicing.
